The Selvámonos Festival: Music and Art in the Jungle
Music and art lovers, should make it a point to visit the UNESCO-backed Selvámonos music festival. The setting is ideal, as it will all take place within the Oxapampa-Asháninka-Yanesha Biosphere Reserve near Yanachaga Chemillen National Park. It’s nestled in a green valley of Peru’s high jungle and protects indigenous communities as well as the area’s flora and fauna. And, if you share the organizers’ ecologically conscious ideals, then it’ll be an even more perfect fit for you.
A total of twelve bands and five DJs will take part in this 5th edition of the festival, which falls on June 28th and June 29th. However, there will be a week of free cultural events in town preceeding this.
During the festival, information stands will be manned by various NGO’s in order to get the word out about their admirable efforts to protect the natural resources and diverse cultures of Peru. In such a sunny and enthusiastic environment, don’t be surprised to find yourself recruited as a volunteer.
Instruments made from recycled materials will be provided in order to turn spectators into participants. There will even be a bike-powered generator. If you’re traveling with kids, there will be entertainment stations for them as well. Eco-products such as apparel and free-trade food and drink will be on offer, with tastings of the latter.
To get to Oxapampa, you just need to take a bus from Lima. The trip takes about 6.5 hours, but is quite affordable.
