Take Part in the Puno Anniversary Celebrations on Lake Titicaca this November

Next Tuesday, Puno will celebrate its 346th Founding Anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the city has released an official month-long program with more than a hundred activities; the best of which we’ve compiled here.

The main parade will take place on Nov 3^rd and will be followed by the traditional Serenade to Puno concert and the Great Puneñan Night, which amounts to a huge open-air party that will include live musical acts and fireworks. The following day, there’ll be a theatrical presentation of the rising from the waters of Lake Titicaca of the mythical Manco Cápac, who according to Incan legend was child of the sun who eventually founded the Incan Empire in Cusco. He ruled alongside his wife and sister Mama Ocllo, who will also make an appearance.

Celebrating New Years Eve in Cusco

Celebrating Día de la Canción Criolla in Lima This October

October 31^st in Peru is not just Halloween, but also Día de la Canción Criolla, Creole Music Day, which honors the unique blend of African, Spanish, and Andean music that has characterized the Peruvian coast since the colonial period. The genre includes the graceful national dance of Peru, the marinera, as well as the upbeat festejo, the bluesy landó, the vals criolla waltz, and the zamacueca, among others. Its superstars include the internationally renowned Susana Baca, Eva Ayllon, and Chabuca Granda.

Celebrate Peru’s National Guinea Pig Day this Friday

Last year, Peruvian authorities declared the second Friday of each October to be National Guinea Pig Day. Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture (MINAGRI) explained, “We’ve decided to establish National Cuy Day on the merit of the importance of the care and raising of the animal, its genetic richness that contributes to family economies, and, above all, its contribution to food and nutritional safety.”

You may be surprised to hear that 11 tons of cuy meat were exported last year, 90% of which went to the United States.
