Chachapoyas Fest 2015The fourth annual Chachapoyafest is set to offer a look into the culture of the Peruvian Amazonas region and the way in which it interacts with the rest of the world through art. Locals and international visitors alike join together for workshops, theater, film, concerts, roundtables, exhibitions, and the creation of communal art from multimedia extravaganzas to large-scale murals. It’s billed as a meeting between the artists and the community.

Those of you planning on traveling to La Paz next month should think about swinging through Tiwanaku (in Spanish, Tiahuanaco) for the Aymaran New Year on June 21st, when the 5,522nd year of the Ayamara calendar will begin. As an agriculture-based society, the Aymara began their new year at the beginning of a new agricultural cycle. During the Southern Hemisphere’s winter solstice, the longest night of the year when the sun was at its farthest, meant a new sowing season was to begin, and required rituals of celebration, adoration to initiate the sun’s return.

inti_raymi_festival_sacsayhuaman_cusco_peruDuring the last two weeks of June, there will be ten parades, three open-air concerts with light shows and the occasional fireworks, some food fairs, the legendary Inti Raymi Sun Festival, and much ringing of bells, raising of flags, and firing of guns. Here’s the official program for Inti Raymi and the second two weeks of Cusco’s anniversary month celebrations (the anniversary program for the first two weeks can be found here). The most elaborate events are in red so you know what to prioritize, but do as much as you can and don’t miss the fun!

It all starts with the official launch on Sunday, May 31st and is chock full of processions and parades. When the Saints Come Marching In…

The best place to celebrate Corpus Christi is in Cusco, where the event takes on a character not found anywhere else.  Saints and Virgins lavishly adorned in elaborate clothing and ornaments process along the same streets where, in the time of the Inca Empire, richly attired and bejeweled mummies once processed.  For Cusco, this is the year’s most important and extravagant religious festival.
