Sometimes, online reviews can shock you, for good or ill. Lately, we’ve been thrilled at the positive response to Pirwa Colonial Hostel in Cusco, even on notoriously tough review sites like Tripadvisor.
Taína T, from Río de Janeiro, offered the latest review for Pirwa Colonial on March 26th, titled “The best hostel I stayed in Peru!” Reviews like this make us ecstatic!
The Weavers’ Route near Cusco is a collection of towns in the Sacred Valley of the Incas where traditional weaving methods are still present in large force. Visitors can learn how local weavers spin yarn from sheep and from South American camelids such as the alpaca and the vicuña, how natural plants and insects from the area are used to produce different colors, and how the intricate designs of blankets and tapestries are produced on looms small and large. Participants are encouraged to try their hand at using the weaver’s tools, and also learn about the Andean iconography which has been used since pre-Columbian times to represent different myths, beliefs, and customs.
George Bernard Shaw once said that there is no sincerer love than the love of food. While he was likely referencing the enjoyment we receive when partaking of food, the sentiment is even more apt when applied to the production of food: the growing of vegetables, the sorting of grains, the preparation of dishes. To learn how Cusco lives and loves, you only need to visit its most popular market, where locals have gathered since the time of the Incas (when it was just an open field) to sell and procure items for their daily needs. It’s a bustling atmosphere offering products and flavors that are exotic to foreign eyes; and unlike other popular sights and attractions you’ll see in and around Cusco, the San Pedro Market offers a glimpse of the true face of Cusco.
Cusco’s Plaza de Armas is a multisensory experience, where barkers invite travelers and locals alike to enter stores and restaurants housed in colonial buildings erected upon Incan foundations. Competition is intense, and often they’ll offer a complimentary drink as an incentive to choose the locale they represent. Although the insistence can be fatiguing, there are great reasons to dine in the Plaza, mainly quality, accessibility, and the view.
It’s almost time for our biggest event of the year- the New Year’s Eve Party at Pirwa Colonial Hostel in Cusco! This year’s theme is Back to the Future, since 2015 is the year in the future that Marty McFly traveled to. Apparently, the scientists have only six months left to invent Marty’s hoverboard if they’re going to make the summer 2015 deadline….we’re waiting on that.
