The Andean town of Pisac is not more than a short car ride from Cusco, and its Sunday market is perhaps the best market in Peru. Locals from surrounding towns arrive in their traditional clothing. They bring their wares, hoping as well to find something interesting to acquire as well. All around the main square, the hundreds of booths sell everything from musical instruments to alpaca sweaters.
Pirwa Hostels has gone through a lot of changes in the last year. The upstairs game and TV room were completely redone and expanded, so that those who’d like to relax and play billiards, darts, table tennis, guitars, or table games, or just sit back on a bean bag and watch a movie, now have even more room to do so. The new look, a souvenir from some fellow backpackers, is more colorful and laid back. There’s still a fast food stand right by the game room where you can purchase pizzas or burgers, but the bar is no longer there and has moved to a new spot.
Machu Picchu Citadel, the fabled Lost City of the Incas, never fails to impress travelers with its impressive stonework and terracing, its lofty position on a rocky and inaccessible mountain, the stunning natural greenery of its location, and the enduring mystery of its purpose. Its isolation allowed it to remain unscathed by the destruction of the Spanish Conquest and the years following. Furthermore, the superior construction, with precisely cut and fitted stones, has resisted seismic movements, heavy rain, and mudslides- without the assistance of mortar. As the most complete remaining example of Incan architecture and urban planning, Machu Picchu ignites the imagination.

If you’ll be traveling through Peru in July, get ready to string up your red and white streamers and don your Peruvian flag pin! One of Peru’s largest celebrations of the year is Independence Days, celebrated the 28th and 29th of each July. The atmosphere is festive, with red and white decorations appear throughout the streets, and many Peruvians take advantage of the long weekend to travel and to celebrate with their families, enjoying traditional regional dishes throughout the country such as ceviche and causa in Lima, goat stew in the north, roast guinea pig and alpaca in the Andes, and stuffed chili peppers in Arequipa to name just a few. Throughout Peru there’ll be fairs and street parties, outdoor concerts and fireworks shows, impromptu serenades in the plazas and parks, folkloric dance parades, and bullfights.
