Climbing Misti Volcano

The Crater of El Misti Volcano, Arequipa, PeruEl Misti Volcano rises behind the White City of Arequipa, and has become an iconic symbol of the city and its unique culture. If you find the volcano beckoning to you during your visit to the city, you’ll be glad to know that there are two different excursions you can take to El Misti. One is to arrange a downhill biking trip that begins on its slope and ends back in Arequipa city proper, and the other is to arrange a hiking trip to the Volcano’s summit.

The Butterfly House in Aguas Calientes in Machu Picchu Sanctuary

The Butterfly House in Aguas Calientes in Machu Picchu Sanctuary

Butterfly_House_Aguas_Calientes_Machu_Picchu_Sanctuary_04Welcome to the world of the butterflies, reads the sign at the entrance of Wasi Pillpi. The name means Butterfly House in Quechua, and its location within the high-altitude jungle refuge known as Machu Picchu Historical Sanctuary means it can make good on its name: the sanctuary boasts more than a hundred distinct, endemic butterfly species. (In fact, probably the only sights in the sanctuary which outnumber the sanctuary are orchids and backpackers.) If you’ve got free time to spend in Aguas Calientes (also known as Machu Picchu Pueblo), a stop at the Butterfly House can teach you a little more about the biodiverse world in which the ruins of Machu Picchu are located.

Huascarán contains all of the strikingly beautiful glacial peaks of the Cordillera Blanca as well as pristine turquoise lakes and rivers, red quenua forests, eucalyptus groves, waterfalls, rock spires, and flowering bushes. It’s popular mainly for hiking and camping, but is also good for mountain climbing, skiing and biking.

The Yaku Raymi Water Festival

The Yaku Raymi Water Festival

Yaku-Raymi-1The Andean town of Andamarca in Peru’s Ayacucho region receives thousands of visitors during Qatun Yaku Raymi (Big Water Festival) on August 20th-26th. Andamarca was the historic capital of the Rucanas (Working People) from 700AD up to their conquest by Incas.  In this dry climate, the pre-Inca agricultural terraces rely on an underground irrigating system and water is not only precious but still revered as a deity in pre-Columbian rituals.
