Budget Hangouts: The Backpacker Trail in Peru
When it comes to Peru’s big-ticket attractions, such Machu Picchu and the Peruvian Amazon, there are options that range from cheap to opulent. Other destinations, however, are firmly ensconced on the backpacker trail, offering low prices, adventure, and travelers’ communities:
The desert oasis of Huacachina just outside of Ica is a popular daytrip destination for travelers, who enjoy sand boarding and riding dune buggies along its enormous surrounding dunes. Although there isn’t much in the tiny town itself, aside from the lake, the area is replete with budget eateries, bars, and hostels targeted at young travelers seeking parties and relaxation.
At the town of Mancora, you can live the beach life on the cheap, even tucking into large and elegant seafood lunches for a pittance. Windsurfing, horseback riding, and surfing are among the activities on offer. You can even go whale watching during the correct season. In the evenings, there’s always a bonfire or party to head to.
If neither the desert nor beach call to you, the mountains are a wonderful option for more rugged travlers. At Huascarán National Park, travelers can choose among treks to different pristine, high-altitude lakes that boast otherworldly scenery. In between treks, in the small hikers’ town of Huaraz, all of the amenities for lodging and socializing are on offer.
While you’re certain to find many backpackers in Cusco, the city isn’t Peru’s cheapest, while the other towns mentioned are very backpacker-driven and economical. If you’re looking to take a few days’ break from your tour-to-tour itinerary, any of these spots would give you the opportunity to meet all sorts of independent and aventurous travelers!
