The city of La Paz stands at over 3500m above sea level, and El Alto airport at over 4000m; this means that these cities have reduced oxygen levels that can affect visitors from lower altitudes. Frankly, some people feel the sickness the moment they get off the plane. Many travelers don’t feel anything for several hours, and then get hit with attitude sickness symptoms. If you’re traveling to La Paz, Bolivia, you need to have a plan for dealing with altitude sickness, or soroche, as it’s locally known.

Take Part in the Puno Anniversary Celebrations on Lake Titicaca this November

Next Tuesday, Puno will celebrate its 346th Founding Anniversary. As part of the celebrations, the city has released an official month-long program with more than a hundred activities; the best of which we’ve compiled here.

The main parade will take place on Nov 3^rd and will be followed by the traditional Serenade to Puno concert and the Great Puneñan Night, which amounts to a huge open-air party that will include live musical acts and fireworks. The following day, there’ll be a theatrical presentation of the rising from the waters of Lake Titicaca of the mythical Manco Cápac, who according to Incan legend was child of the sun who eventually founded the Incan Empire in Cusco. He ruled alongside his wife and sister Mama Ocllo, who will also make an appearance.

Explore Tambopata Reserve in the Peruvian Amazon

The Tambopata – Candamo Reserved Zone was created in 1990 to protect 1.5 million hectares of rainforest and wetlands to the east and south of Puerto Maldonado, in the Amazon basin. It can be visited all year long and is a popular destination for travelers who want to visit its clay licks, which are some of the largest in the world and which attract hundreds of rare macaws and parrots as well as some mammal species. The reserve also possesses various world records when it comes to bird species (545 in only 5,500 hectares) and butterfly species (1122). The area is so diverse that a person can walk a mile along the rainforest of Tambopata – Candamo Reserve without encountering two trees of the same species.
