Now You Can Visit Lima’s Huaca Pucllana at Night

As a pre-Columbian pyramid surrounded by the modern buildings of Miraflores, Lima’s Huaca Puccllana has always been eye-catching. Now, it’s even more so, thanks to a new lighting system that amps up the site’s mysterious charm and allows for the offering of night tours.

There’s something different about being able to visit an archaeological site under the cover of night, visually separated it from the city which has grown up around it. It provides an evocative atmosphere in which to absorb the guide’s stories about the way of life of the cultures which used this site, their beliefs and rituals.

Huaca Pucllana was an administrative Night-View-of-the-ruins-of-Huaca-Pucllana-Archaeological-Site-in-Miraflores-Peru-2and ceremonial center in use from 200-1400AD, first by the Lima culture then by the Wari and Ychsma cultures. The site is still under excavation; in fact, four tombs were discovered near the top of the site’s Great Pyramid just three months ago. Aside from the actual ruins, there’s also a restaurant and a museum showcasing the relics which were unearthed at the site.

The adobe temple-shrine has been outfitted with an LED lighting system in preparation for the offering of night tours which will begin next Wednesday, February 17th. The system includes 190 lights, reflectors, and bars, as well as360 meters of luminous ribbon. It’s enough to artfully illuminate the key patios, plazas and enclosures throughout the site.

You’ll find it on the 8th block of General Borgoño Street, just a few blocks from our hostel in Miraflores, Pirwa Inclan. Tours of the site are offered every day of the week except for Tuesdays, from 9am to 5pm, and last about an hour and 15 minutes. Admission during the day is 12 Peruvian soles. Next week, evening tours will begin that will be offered every day of the week except for Mondays and Tuesdays,Night-View-of-the-ruins-of-Huaca-Pucllana-Archaeological-Site-in-Miraflores-Peru-3 from 7pm to 10pm. They will last about 40 minutes. Admission during this second shift will be 15 Peruvian soles.

You can also tour Huaca Pucllana as part of a city tour of Lima, which stop at this archaeological site as well as the colonial center of the city and some modern sights as well.
