Exploring the Seaside Miraflores District of Lima

Looking over the Pacific in Miraflores, LimaThe ample gardens and parks of Miraflores’ seaside cliffs and its central park make it the city’s greenest area. Thanks to these, the district offers travelers a scenic, laidback respite from the gray city of Lima. Miraflores is the place to go in Lima if you are looking for freshly-prepared ceviche or hip nightlife. Because it has traditionally been a slightly more affluent district, and is now so popular with travelers, Miraflores is the safest area of Lima. You’ll still want to be wary of pickpockets, but you can certainly go out at night without worry.

Miraflores also boasts a vibrant art scene, which includes a pop-up art fair and flea market in Óvalo Miraflores (also known as Kennedy Park) several days a week. If your taste leans more towards luxe goods, than stop by Larcomar, a ritzy mall built into the cliffs, overlooking the sea.

You’ll want to spend at least a day in the Looking over the Pacific in Miraflores, Limadistrict, which will give you enough time to stroll along the Malecón Verde, the path which follows the cliffs. It is interrupted by numerous parks as well as a launching ground where you can opt for tandem parasailing if you’re so inclined. You’ll also find ample opportunity for fresh juices and casual snacks such as sandwiches and churros.

Do stop by Huaca Pucllana archeological site as well. At night, the 1500-year-old adobe pyramid is artistically lit up. If you choose to visit during the day (between 9am and 5pm) and tour the site, you’ll be able to see the pyramid, plaza and other structures, ongoing digs, an exposition hall where the excavation’s main discoveries are displayed, and pre-Incan lookouts that provide insight into area cultures such as the Lima, Wari and the Yschma.

When we opened our hostel in Lima, we chose Miraflores for many of the reasons mentioned above: the district’s beauty, convenience, and safety. Stop by Pirwa Inclan B&B if you need a place to stay in the City of Kings!
