Lima Celebrates its Founding Anniversary This Week
On January 18th, Lima will celebrate its 480th founding anniversary. The City of Kings always marks the event in style, with weeks of events. Unfortunately, the official program has yet to be announced, but we’ll be checking every day to get that information to our guests and readers as soon as possible.
One event is always a certainty, however- the concerts and shows in the Plaza Mayor on January 18th. You can watch as some of Peru’s most reknowned singers, musicians, dancers, and poets pay homage to the capital into the wee hours of the following day. The day starts with a large parade through the city’s central streets, continues with midday mass followed by a program of folk dances, ballet, creole music and more in the Plaza Mayor, and ends with the requisite fireworks.
Although there hasn’t been any news about the popular Peruvian sweets food fair, which highlighted treats from the colonial era, it appears that a replacement has emerged. The Tradiciones Fest Perú fair will be featuring the traditional dishes and desserts of Lima on the 17th and 18th in Parque de la Exposición. Entry is free and live entertainment will be provided.
The Magical Water Circuit has been temporarily closed, but will open on January 18th to mark the celebration. Go in the evening if you can, to see the thematic light, music & film projection show at fantasia fountain…
If you’re visiting Lima this week and would like information during any of the celebration days, just stop by reception at Pirwa Inclan B&B, our hostel in Miraflores, Lima. If you need some company, you can also check if any other guests are attending certain events.
