Sleeping Well in a Shared Dorm

Shared Dorm at Pirwa Hostel in LimaFor many backpackers, staying in hostels and sleeping in shared dorm rooms isn’t just a way to cut costs; it’s a more adventurous, entertaining, and lively way to travel. It does have its frustrations, however: snorers, early wakers, or late, sometimes drunken arrivals happen to us all. With a little preparation, however, you can ensure that your night is as restful as you need it to be:

First, block the light & noise. Earplugs and an eye mask can block the light and noise of late arrivals, but don’t take up much space in your backpack. If you’re really serious about your peace and quiet, and have the room, you can even pack noise-isolating headphones. It also helps to choose a bed far away from the dorm’s or the bathroom’s door.

Most people request the bottom bunk, as you don’t need to climb into it, but it’s the top bunk that offers a sounder sleep. No one will sit on your bed during the day, no one will get confused and try to climb into your bed when they arrive late at night, nor stumble along to the top bunk while you’re in the lower one. Really, it’s the upper bunk which insulates you from any dorm room inconvenience, and all it costs is the effort of climbing the stairs.

The majority of backpackers are friendly, social beings who understand what it’s like to need to wake up at 4am to reach Machu Picchu before first light hits. Sometimes, we can get a little careless about noise, so don’t discount the effect a friendly reminder can have. If you’re on good terms with your dorm mates from the get-go, and conscientious of their comfort as well, they will be even more receptive to your requests.

Lastly, sleep in peace. Secure your valuables in your locker while you sleep, in order to avoid that feeling that you need to sleep with one eye open or reach out and fondle your laptop when someone enters the room at night.
